All of the major Hollywood studios, several independents and a few porn outlets are being accused of violating a patent that allows DVDs and Blu-Ray discs to organize and skip to chapters and scenes in a menu.
The plaintiff in the case is Patent Harbor LLC, which filed its patent infringement lawsuit on Tuesday in Texas District Court.
The complaint targets practically every film that has been released on home entertainment in the past 20 years, including Twentieth Century Fox's Predator, Lionsgate's Kick Ass, Disney's Chronicles of Narnia, The Weinstein Company's A Single Man, Time Warner's The Wire, Lightsorm's Avatar, and Summit's The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
The patent in question covers a "Method for Assembling Content Addressable Video," filed in 1994.The plaintiff is seeking in its complaint compensatory damages and post-judgment royalties.In addition, FSSI will give Narnia the biggest release for a Hollywood film to date, with over 800 prints including dubbed versions in Hindi and regional languages and 3D versions as well. The previous Hollywood release with the highest number prints was last year's 2012, which opened with 766 prints and collected over $20 million.
According to figures from FSSI, the Narnia films feature in the top five Hollywood franchises released in India, with the previous installment Prince Caspian collecting 270 million rupees ($6 million), putting it among the top 10 highest-grossing Hollywood films in India of all time.In September, Narnia series producer Mark Johnson previewed 30 minutes of his Dec. 10 release The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Perhaps the good news for Hollywood is that everyone can split the legal defense costs.
