Mizuno is introducing two new ranges of wedges - the JPX Series (Mizuno JPX AD Series)for club golfers and the MP T-11s featuring Quad Cut grooves and which conform to the latest Tour regulations for all wedges from January 2011.
Slightly larger than Mizuno's MP Series, the JPX line, say the makers, offer 'an easier transition from a larger cavity-based pitching wedge, while still having an element of versatility and control and enabling delicate shot from close in.'
Lofts are designed to accompany the stronger pitching wedges now common in cavity-backed sets with the gap wedge starting at 49 degrees (SW 55 deg, LW 60 deg) to allow even distance gaps.
The Mizuno JPX A25 Series , says Mizuno, provide 'a pure, softer metal in the clubhead that holds the ball a fraction longer on the face with full pitches.' On shorter pitch shots, where the ball does not fully compress, 'CNC milled score-lines between the grooes ensure maximum traction.'
Andy Kikidas, Tour Operations manager, says: "The new rules on groove design - banning the squarer cut - forced us to completely re-assess how to make the ball spin. We found the real spin losses were found on shorter pitches where the ball was just partially struck - rather than the fuller shots. We found the shallower, wider groove, in conjunction with some face milling, made a huge difference on shots around the green.
"Luke Donald has used this set up over the 2010 season and has become one of the world's best players for sand saves."
The Mizuno JPX E600 Iron Set will be available with a recommended price of 75 each with steel shaft (100 graphite) and the MP T-11s for 105 (steel) with either white satin or black nickel finish.
