subject: Tablet Computer As A Pure Media Consumption Device [print this page]

The launch of Apple iPad in April 2010 dramatically altered the landscape for computing devices.

Many vendors had dabbled with the tablet computer form factor in the past, but none had succeeded. Before the launch of iPad, a tablet was thought of as a laptop computer with support for stylus inputs on a touchscreen, as an add on alternative to the keyboard and mouse combination. The tablet was thought of as a PC with a different form factor.

Apple boldly redefined the tablet as a pure media consumption device, as opposed to a media creation and consumption combination like a netbook or laptop computer.

Apple's iPad sold 3 million units in the first 80 days. Its gleeful acceptance by consumers worldwide, jolted other vendors, who realized that the concept of a pure media consumption device was here to stay.

Rumors, leaks and announcements of new tablets planned by other major and minor vendors are now keeping technology media outlets busy.Dell StreakDell was the first major vendor to jump into the market space carved out by Apple with its iPad. It launched a 5" Smartphone / Tablet hybrid in June in Europe.

With the Streak, Dell has shown a willingness to take risks and innovate, by choosing to retain Smartphone features and choosing a much smaller form factor than the iPad which features a display size of 9.7".

However, a willingness to innovate does not necessarily translate to success and the jury is still out on its concept.

Dell's decision to feature a rear facing main camera and a front facing video conferencing camera on the tablet is being emulated by other vendors who have announced or leaked their own tablet concepts.laptop batteries | cheap laptop batteries |Dell inspiron 1525 Battery
