This winter is promising to be a cold one, so it's no surprise that many people are planning on heading off to warm destination for a wee break. Cheap Canary Islands holidayshave made this archipelago a prime destination for winter tourists. Though it is famous for its beaches, this collection of islands is also a hiker's paradise, so if you are heading there on a winter holiday be sure to bring along your walkingboots.
The Canary Islands are volcanic islands, which has given them rocky terrain and beautiful vistas that translate into great hiking trails. All seven of the islands feature excellent paths, so you should have no problem finding a great hike no matter where you're based. One highlight is the Pico delTeide Volcano on Tenerife. At a height of 12,195 feet it offers a good challenge and will remind you of the island's turbulent volcanic past.
One of the greatest advantages of hiking in the Canary Islands is the weather. With wonderful temperatures which are neither too hot nor too cold, you'll feel like the weather was set to perfectly compliment your hikes. You are also quite unlikely to be rained on as precipitation is quite low, but of course it's still worth bringing a light raincoat along.
The one downside of hiking in the Canary Islands is the lack of camp grounds. There are very few sites on the islands, and it's forbidden to camp at random. This may limit some true outdoor enthusiasts, but should be no problem for the casual hiker who would probably rather retire to his or her hotel room anyways.
So if you are off on a vacation to the Canary Islands, don't forget to get some hiking in. After all, a couple of hikes are the perfect complement to some well-deserved time on the beach.
