How to stop a puppy from biting.
When your puppy is playing it is only natural that it will nip, unfortunately it is very probable that when he becomes excited that he will nip you. But the fact of the matter is, that irrespective of how endearing he is or how harmless it all seems, you have to, as a responsible owner, stop the nipping as soon as it starts.
Puppies have to be taught early on, that even when playing, that their teeth must under no circumstances come in contact with human flesh. By stopping your puppy nipping early you will reap the benefits later as your puppy grows, because having been taught not to bite he will be far less likely to bite anyone later which is especially important if you have a large dog, although even small breeds can inflict a nasty bite if their nipping behavior is not stopped at an early age.
When playing with your puppy, you must channel any biting behaviour towards his toys. The softer ones that have a rewarding give when it your puppy's mouth are the best choice, but also have some rubber ones that are able to be filled with treats which will keep his interest and help him when he is teething.
Puppies as young as 8 weeks old are still capable of learning that it is just not acceptable to bite. If when playing with your puppy he bites you, say "ouch" in a firm low voice, and remove whatever part of you he has in his mouth.
If as is often the case your puppy ignores you and continues to bite, just ignore him and walk away. If when you walk away he follows you, step through a door and close the door behind you leaving him on the other side. Only leave him there for a short while, just long enough for him to wonder why you have left him.
By doing this you are teaching your puppy to stop biting because when he bites he stops the play. He will quickly learn that you will only continue to play with him if he controls his biting. Very quickly he will understand and it will become noticeable that he will stop biting as hard and less often. You continue to apply this technique and as he progresses, start saying "ouch" to the softer bites and he will learn not to bite or nip at all.
