Cold weather can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, stroke, pneumonia and depression. Every winter in the UK, 25,00030,000 deaths are linked to the cold weather. Currently, approximately four million households in the UK are in fuel poverty. This is when a household spends more than 10% of its income to keep warm.
Keep homes warm. A main living room should be between around 18 to 21C (64-70F) and the rest of the house at a minimum of 16C (61F). Hot-water bottle or electric blanket (but not both at the same time) can also be used to keep warm while you're in bed.
Wrap up warm, inside and out. Several thin layers of clothes are better than one thick layer. Don't forget to wear hats, gloves and scarves. For people with heart or respiratory problems they should stay inside during a cold period if possible.
Keep active. Move around at least once an hour and don't sit down for long periods of time. Even light exercise will help keep warm.
Look out for elderly friends and neighbours. Check they're safe and well through the winter. Make sure they're warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don't need to go out during very cold weather.
Top tips to keep the cold at bay
Plastic On Windows. Putting plastic on windows may sound tacky but it is an excellent way to save some extra cash this winter. If you can't stand looking at the plastic, cover your windows with some beautiful and stylish heavy drapes and you will forget about the plastic on the windows.
Keep Windows Close. With or without plastic, keeping windows shut is a great way to keep the cold air out.
Opened Blinds and Curtains. Letting some sun shine its way into your home can actually help get some needed warmth throughout the day. Open the blinds and curtains during the day and feel the difference it can make at night. A little sunshine in your life is a good thing.
Wear Socks to Sleep. Sleeping with socks can give an extra boost of warmth and it can actually help with the circulation. I personally prefer wool socks because they are warmer, prevent blisters, foot odor and some even look adorable.
Exercise. Getting your heart pumping gets your blood flowing and temperature rising. As an added bonus, you will look and feel great too.
Proper Bedding. No need to bundle up on loads of sheets and blankets. A high quality down comforter and duvet cover will help get you sleeping like a baby in no time.
Hot Tea. A hot cup of tea will help keep you warm plus it is very relaxing and soothing.
Cuddling. Cuddling by the one that you love doesn't take much work plus it is absolutely free and very rewarding.
