Located within the cloud caressing landscapes of the Nallathanni Estate, the Tata Tea Museum just maybe the best place in Kerala to uncover the long and illustrious history of tea plantation and production in the southern Indian state of Kerala. With a focus on the birth and evolution of tea production, this sprawling museum also serves as a tribute to the pioneering forefathers of the industry who toiled tirelessly to convert the lush surroundings of Kerala in to a prime tea producing region in the country.

Taking visitors through the various stages of tea making, the museum showcases the progress of technology relating to the industry with manufacturing equipment ranging from the elementary tea roller to the currently used automated tea processing facilities. The first sight that catches the eye of visitors who walks through the museums doors is a granite block with a sundial placed in the middle. The Art Industrial School in Tamil Nadu is responsible for the making of this curious artefact back in 1913, which is complemented by other exhibits of antiquity on display such as a second century BC burial urn from the region close to the Periakanal estate.

Other highlights at the venue include a 'Pelton Wheel which was used in the 1920s to generate power at the Kanniamallay estate plant and the Rotorvane conventional tea roller which was employed in CTC type tea processing in 1905. A train wheel from the Light Railway in Kundale Valley is also another curious exhibit in addition to those relating to the production of black tea.

A special quarter of the institution houses ancient typewriters, exquisite bungalow furnishings and other household items from the early days such as a wooden bathtub, iron oven and a magneto telephone. Other exhibits include an EPABX belonging to a 1909 telephone network and manual calculators while guests who relish a steaming cuppa can try their hand at tea tasting in the museums demonstration room. The CTC and orthodox tea-manufacturing section is another popular haunt for intrigued tea lovers who wish to gauge a behind-the-scenes understating of the intricacies of tea manufacturing.
