Massage Therapy Training and Course Options

The use of therapeutic massage therapy is geared towards helping individuals relax and heal from injuries. Students can enter training that will prepare them for a career in this popular field. A few accredited colleges provide students with preliminary training in the field.

Online education in this field is available but students cannot gain their education entirely online because the simple nature of the field requires students to put in extensive hands-on training. This leaves students with the option to enter a hybrid-training format. This type of setting allows students to work through general education and theory-based courses from the comfort of their own home. After this training is completed students will then complete the rest of their training at the college's traditional learning campus. The type of education earned differs from college to college depending on the focus of the established program. Some schools will orient training around holistic health that centers on kinesiology and aromatherapy while others will focus on other forms of health care.

With eighty different types of massage therapy, also known as modalities, students will gain an in depth education. Students can step into the industry and start their own business or work for numerous employers in rehab centers, spas, and more. Most schools incorporate many types of massage therapy techniques into learning. Students should research their schooling options and choose the type of education they would like to receive. Certificate and associates degree programs are available through numerous educational programs. Students that complete a certificate program will be ready to enter a career in as little as six to nine months. Associates degree programs typically include more training and last approximately two years. Courses may include:

Anatomy

Physiology

Medical Terminology

These types of courses are integrated into both options. Online coursework is a great way for students to prepare for hands-on training.

Once online courses are completed students can enter phase two of a hybrid-training program, which is the hands-on learning portion of a program. Programs typically teach students both Eastern and Western massage therapy techniques. Students explore several different areas such as sports medicine, pathology of disease, body movement, and more to train for careers in the workplace. Certificate programs give students a broad foundation in massage therapy techniques. In an advanced certificate program students are allowed to study a specialty. Students can specifically study how to work with many clients such as pregnant women or athletes. Course subjects that will require hands on training include:

Shiatsu Massage Techniques

Trigger Point Therapy Practices

Orthopedic Massage Procedures

Education is central to establishing a career and students can choose what area of the industry is right for them. By having the chance to learn holistic healing and studying these different forms of massage therapy students will be able to effectively compete for their desired career in today's popular job market.

With the ability to complete a portion of education online, students can enroll in natural healing programs from the comfort of their own home and keep their current job. Find a hybrid-training program today by researching which accredited massage therapy schools offer programs for aspiring professionals. Accreditation is provided by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) to programs that offer quality career training.
