Llanafan is between Tregaron and Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. Aberystwyth is in mid Wales and is next to the sea. Llanafan is about ten miles from Aberystwyth and ten miles from Tregaron as well. From Aberystwyth you go along the B4340 until you reach a sign for Llanafan which is down a minor C road. Unfortunately there are quite a few car crashes along the B4340, which ends at Pontrhydfendigaid. Llanafan is a typical Welsh village with quite a few farms around and in Llanafan. There are quite a few sheep and cows around in the many fields here in Llanafan. Now and again a car may pass by but the village is very peaceful and quiet (apart from the occasional bleat of a sheep or mooing of a cow!) and is quite environmentally friendly. We recycle all we can and give unwanted items of clothing to a charity or to the school. We have a bus stop in Llanafan which is very useful because it provides us with transport to school and to town as well. We also have a phone box and a post box which are useful to have. The recycling bins, of course and a good service to us and we also have a playground for little children to play in. I think this village is provided with what it needs but it is a shame that we don have a little village shop. It is also a shame that the council don empty the recycling bins enough because they are next to the playing fields so it looks messy and bad seeing plastic bags on the floor that don fit in the bins. We have asked for a recycling lorry and the council said no and now we have sent in a letter to the Cambrian news complaining about it (so look out for it in the local newspaper!)
Llanafan School has been there for 153 years and is one of the oldest schools in Wales. In the last few years it has changed quite a lot. Ever since we had a new head teacher the school has changed for the better. The School old head teacher had been at the school for a long time when she got unwell and didn recover enough to continue her job. There was a year when a few supply teachers came in for a term or so, until they managed to get a teacher from Plascrug School which they liked. The following year he was the new head master. He went straight to work on making the school better. He began a school council, fruit stall, more sports, using computers in his teaching and breakfast club in the mornings. Soon after, he started the after school club and other clubs began in the village such as Christian club and art club. I think the school made Llanafan more children friendly. Though the old head mistress was very good at plays at Christmas time, the new one made the school fun which improved the children learning.
The village hall was built by lord Lisburne, a local land owner, in 1930. In 2005, the hall was renovated. The village hall has been used for harvest suppers, discos and other sources of entertainment, but since the renovation, the village hall has been used more and for different things. As well as fund raising events and bingo nights the hall can now be used for playing badminton and snooker. The kitchen has been improved and the front of the building made more modern. It now has a reception type thing when you enter and much more hygienic toilets as well. The stage has been made so that it can get longer when you want it to. All this happened because the old building was worn and the inside was not completely attractive. I liked the old outside building because it was old fashioned in a good way and in my opinion the new outer building doesn fit with the unchanged part of the building. Inside is much nicer though the girders get in the way when playing badminton!
Maes-y-felin playing fields was made in 1997 when a committee was made to encourage activity in the village. The committee got funding from the national lottery and they borrowed land from the county council. The Maes-y-felin committee flattened the ground and put grass on it for the playing field. They also made a tennis court and a shed for keeping stuff like the tennis net and lawnmower in. The playing fields were successful and are used by the village school, for parties, tournaments (between schools or villages nearby) and for just leisure and games with your friends. There used to be a Maes-y-felin football team in Llanafan but when the coach retired claiming that he was too old, no one took his place. That was a shame because there are a lot of keen footballers in the village. Later on, Maes-y-felin got recycling bins from the council as the lorry was unable to detour over to Llanafan. The bins are still good as it keeps our village nice and environmentally friendly. The council aren coming as often to get the recycling so the bins pile up nowadays. Not long after, a walk was made in the woods that ended up on the B4340, where the woodland ended. On the route a bridge was made across the stream to Maes-y-felin. This stops people from having to walk on the road. There are carvings placed beside the path and now and then there are signs which contain information about plants in the woods. The children make dens and rope swings. I like this path because it nice and interesting and fun to use. It is a good place for walking the dog or going on a hot day as it is shady. It helps to stop people from using the car when it is unnecessary and it decreases accidents on the road. At around the same time, the committee built some picnic benches which unfortunately don get used so much. They also built a shelter because a few football matches were being held in the rain and the people watching it were getting wet. It was made out of wood and is still used by teenagers to sit there after a hot game of tennis! The changing rooms were also made in memory of a boy who died of cancer. It is used by Llanilar football club in the summer holidays every year for a three-day football weekend.
Until the early 1990s, there were quite a few people from the working in the forestry commission because they lived close to it, so they didn have to go into town to work. In the mid 1990s however, the forestry commission moved to town. This was a big loss to the people in Llanafan because they now had to go ten miles to work, and some of them didn even have a car. There was a group of people who formed a committee and put in a bid to the national lottery hoping that they would get a community centre to replace the forestry commission. Unfortunately, they didn get the money and the Welsh Development Agency replaces the forestry commission instead. They still own that property and rent it out to small businesses. They call it Canolafan.
