The Basilica of San Lorenzo is one of the largest churches of Florence, located in in the old city in the square with the same name. On the side of theBasilica takes places the characteristic San Lorenzo market. It was consecrated in 393 and is one of the oldest churches in the city of Florence. For threehundred years the church has played the role of the cathedral, before to let the status to Santa Reparata, where the remains of the first Bishop of Florence were solemnly transferred , St. Zenobius. The church was enlarged and rededicated the first time in 1059, with a chapter of canons in the church that
gave impetus to the construction of some circles as the cloister beside the church.
A further enlargement of the Basilica was approved by the Canons at the beginning of the fifteenth century, but works proceeded very slowly initially. Clement VII, another Medici pope, did not fail also to enrich the complex of San Lorenzo, commissioning Michelangelo to create the Laurentian Library, whileinside the church he builts the balcony on the counter for the display of relics. The small bell tower dates back to 1740, by Ferdinando Ruggieri. It was the last of dynasty, Anna Maria Ludovica to commission the last major work in the basilica: the decoration of the dome with the Glory of the Saints, a work of Florentine painter Vincenzo Meucci (1742).
With the suppression of religious bodies in the nineteenth century, the library was legally separate from the rest of the complex and was created the Museum of the Medici Chapels. The Laurentian Opera was established in 1907 to manage and for the preservation of the basilica. From March 1, 2001 to access the church is required to pay a ticket.
