If you are using Windows XP, you first of all click on the My Computer folder. Then you click on the "View system information" on the "System Tasks." You will find 7 options:

To go to the Device Manager, you click the 6th Hardware option.

Under Hardware suboptions, you find Device Manager as its first submenu.

You click on the Device Manager. Under Device Manager, you will find Ports (COM & LPT) suboption. You click on the Ports. You find a submenu Communications Port (COM5). Under Communications Port (COM5) properties, there are 5 subchoices:

You click on the Port Settings choice. Under Port Settings, you choose Advanced which gives you a facility to assign COM Port Number as per your requirements.

In our case, the user was willing to change COM Port Number from COM5 to COM1. As a result, when he clicked the COM Port Number, it showed COM5. Now, the user just clicked on the arrow showing COM5 and immediately he was given a drop down menu allowing him to select from COM1 to COM 256. The user selected COM1.
