Text based designs focuses on the text and the style but can include the other elements in it. The text based symbols are best suited for the companies whose name successfully portrays the image and the services they provide. Sometimes graphical representation is not essential to communicate the message, a literal explanation is necessary. A text design is often text only but with some typographic manner like Microsoft, yahoo, Google etc. usually the business name is included with the graphic elements to create a simple, easy to remember and clean individuality. The text based graphics are preferred when your name is distinguishing and you want to correlate your products and services with the parent company.
Letter mark based symbols are almost the text based design but they are typographic marks mainly initials or abbreviations. Monograms and anagrams are the examples, the illustrations of the letters basically becomes the symbols of the company. The initials represents better image than the genuine name. The brand-mark based symbols are often abstract image that shows the facet of the business, it is generally an easy but strong graphic figure denoting a company by relationship. This type of symbol is preferred when an emblem on the products is required, the name is too long, common or when you can't use the parent name. It represents the nature, description and identity of the business.
The combination of text and graphics is known as icon based logo design. It is generally the amalgamation of brand mark and word mark based symbol. A good icon based logo of a company can effectively communicate what the company is all about and the services it provides and it reflects the company personality. The icon type symbol is preferred in the situation where it is a small business with limited funds, starting a new enterprise, when an emblem is required to describe a company, and it should be more than a symbol. Less marketing is required in the website design, if the logo is effective enough to communicate with the visitors and existing customers.
