subject: How To Decorate A Small Bedroom [print this page]

Many people take great pleasure in decorating their homes. Far from just splashing on one or two coats of magnolia paint, decorating your home can be a fulfilling and enriching experience, which allows you to express your personality whilst creating a comfortable and welcoming space. However, decorating is not without its challenges - a point that is perfectly illustrated when it comes to sprucing up a small bedroom.

Decorating a small bedroom involves a little thought and planning. Personal style must be balanced against space saving furniture and colour choices must take proportion and size into consideration. Essentially, there are five key areas that must be carefully considered when approaching the task of decorating a small bedroom. These areas are as follows:

1)Bright Colours

It is essential to get the colour of the room right. Using bright colours will help to create an illusion of space, which can dramatically change the feel of a room. A crisp white ceiling can also work wonders, bringing a sense of height to the room.

2) Matching Furniture

Choose furniture carefully. Matching furniture will create a sense of uniformity and this can help create the illusion of more space within the room. Space saving furniture is essential and you may have to be creative to achieve the level of storage that is required. Remember, floating shelves and wall mounted televisions can all save on valuable floor space.

3) Bespoke Furniture

If you are having trouble finding furniture that meets your taste and storage requirements, you might wish to consider investing in bespoke furniture. Buying furniture that is actually designed to fit into your room can make a huge difference in terms of utilising what space there is available.

4) Window Dressings

When it comes to window dressings bear in mind that curtains can drain life from a small room, demanding attention and drawing the eye away from the created illusion of space. Instead, opting for blinds can create a more clean and modern look. You can afford to be a little daring, though, as when blinds are down or closed they can serve as a 'feature' of the room. Whether you choose 50mm red venetian blinds or dark green vertical blinds, this is an opportunity for you to allow your personality to shine through.

5) Storage Beds

Finally, when decorating a small bedroom, it may be worth investing in a storage style bed. Such beds can be absolutely essential for small bedrooms if additional storage space is required. At the very least, under bed storage should be used to maximise storage space, whilst saving on floor space.
