Memories of Moortown

As we all known, Mizuno like many manufacturers have moved away from the titanium face to a maraging face on their GI irons which provide as hot feel and very good ball speeds. The JPX AD Maraging features a large pocket cavity and wide sole. This automatic iron is made for maximum forgiveness and distance.

The new Mizuno JPX AD Driver takes some getting used to looks wise but has a very forgiving package with a mid height face but shallow back design. It is 46.5" in length to produce maximum distance for those looking to go straight and long.

Howard Wilkinsons famous team in the all white strip came running out to a packed Elland Road, just four days after a Tony Yeboah hattrick in the south of France put the kings of Monaco to the sword in the UEFA Cup.

The noise of that reception was only later bettered by a last-minute Lee Bowyer European winner under the lights in front of you guessedMizuno MP 53 Irons the Revie stand. And this the same week he was attending court on a GBH charge.

In golfing terms my destination for student life was determined not by uni faculties or reputation but by where I could play golf in a city with great golf courses. Dr Alister Mackenzie he of Augusta fame designed three courses in North Leeds within a home run of each other so Leeds won the vote!

It was with great excitement that last week a good friend's bachelor party had been arranged to include a game over Mackenzie's famed Moortown course. Designed in 1909 and host of the first Ryder Cup on European soil, Moortown has always held a richly deserved reputation as one of the countries finest courses. Mizuno MX-1000 IronsTough but fair, with a blend of perfect moorland turf, immaculate greens and natural hazards of gorse, heather, woodland and streams.

It was early Sunday after a Leeds Rhinos Wembley defeat to the Wolves of Warrington and the mood was low given Saturday was spent in-and-around the bars of Headingley and curry houses okay, just the one of downtown Leeds but we had a game of golf to look forward to.

Moortown GC is well positioned off the busy Harrogate Road. As we drove in past the sign reading Host of the 1929 Ryder Cup matches' and down the hedged driveway, the club flag was blowing hard and high in the chilly westerly wind but there was the offer of a bacon and egg butty on offer before we donned our spikes.

After the crispy bacon and runny egg bap it was no time before we were walking up the relatively flat first hole which, typically of all good short-ish par-5s, will require a deft pitch and putt should you miss the slightly elevated green on your second off a tight links-esque lie if you want to make birdie.
