subject: Solutions For Storage Within Small And Large Bathrooms [print this page]

Bathrooms due to their nature require additional space for the basic material requirements such as toiletries, medicines, towels and even cleaning products.

However, although the bathtub, shower, toilet and wash basin are seen as essential features within the bathroom, storage is often one of the main aspects that is often overlooked. This in turn leaves the issue of where to store all the additional requirements you need to store.

Some people do not have the aspect of a small bathroom which allows them to be more creative with the extra space. Larger pieces of bathroom furniture such as freestanding cabinets or built in cupboards, can make a real feature and focal point in your bathroom whether you are going for a more modern chic or traditional feel. With more floor space you have a lot more options open to you and can afford to ignore cupboards all together and use wooden or wicker chests for items such as towels, toiletries and bedding.

The main problem with many home owners is that not everyone has a large amount of bathroom space to work with, particularly in older properties. However by using ingenuity and a little creative flair bathroom storage within a smaller space can still be used to great effect. Wall mounted cabinets, such as a mirrored one above the wash basin, can double up as storage for small items and essentials. Tooth brush holders and soap dishes are also perfect additions that can be fixed to the wall and free up surface space.

Opting for a wall mounted toilet or wash basin is another ideal option that will allow you to free up floor space which in turn will provide solutions for a range of storage features such as a small drawer unit or hamper. On the other hand, the clean lines and neat boxing of a vanity unit may provide enough space to stash away those essential items.

Towels and bottles are the two things you will find in most bathrooms across the world. A heated towel rail or radiator is the obvious place to store bathroom towels but, if you don't have either of these, then use the back of the bathroom door to hang them up.

Bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel can take up a lot of room and look messy lined up on the side of the bath or in the bottom of a shower enclosure. A good tip for keeping things tidy is to think linear and opt for compact shelving or racks that run up the wall. There are lots of in-shower storage options on the market including trays that fit into corner spaces to keep things tidy without getting in the way while you wash.

If you are planning to renovate your bathroom or update your existing suite, make sure you consider storage in your plans. It is essential for both practical and aesthetic reasons and will help to create a bathroom space that is free from clutter and ideal to relax and enjoy.
