However, many ladder accidents are the result of damaged, faulty or poor quality equipment, which can be a real menace. Fortunately, to ensure that the ladders that you buy are good quality, both European and British standards are issued to ensure quality.
These standards and classifications are based on the strength, durability and load the ladders can endure. It is important you ensure that no matter what type of ladder you buy, from a step-ladder to an extension or combination ladder, it adheres to at least one of these standards.

Classifications
There are three main classifications of ladder:
Class I
Class II (EN131)
Class III
Class I ladders are the highest rated in terms of strength, durability and quality. A class 1 ladder can be used for heavy duty and industrial work.
Class II ladders now fall under the European, rather than British standard EN131 Ladders are less durable and strong as class I of this type are most suitable for light trade work such as window cleaning or home DIY use.
Class III ladders are not suitable for any trade and should only be used for minor domestic tasks such as replacing light bulbs. Class III ladders have less strength than both Class I and II ladders.
The ratings are based on the minimum standards and many quality ladders will exceed these amounts
Strength
Ladder strength is based on the vertical load they can carry. This the total weight that should not be exceeded on the ladder when it is erected and the load is static:
