Diabetes is fast approaching epidemic proportions across the world. There is an immediate need for remedies to control and prevent the rising prevalence of the ailment. Scientists across the globe are trying to study all the aspects of the disease, in order to develop prevention and cure methods. Several breakthroughs and developments are taking place at a rapid pace.
Recent Studies on Causes and Management of Diabetes
A study conducted at the University Medical Center Utrecht associated the intake of vitamin K1 and K2 with reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The research uncovered that vitamin K influences calcium metabolism, which leads to lower diabetes risk.
The researchers examined the data collected from 38,094 Dutch participants, within the age group of 20 to 70 years. The responses to the dietary questionnaire were analyzed for the intake of Menaquinones (vitamin K2) and Phylloquinone (vitamin K1).
An adjusted analysis of the collected data showed that individuals who reported high intake of vitamin K1 faced 19% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Further, the study found a linear inverse relationship between development of diabetes and vitamin K2. With an increase of every 10 microgram, a 7% reduction in risk was observed. Also, the study connected higher consumption of vitamin K2 with improved blood lipids and lower levels of C-reactive protein, which promotes inflammation.
Another study conducted by the American Society for Microbiology found a link between certain viruses and development of type 1 diabetes in children. The research revealed that a group of viruses, referred to as enteroviruses, including the poliovirus, may act as a biomarker of early stages of the disease.
The study was conducted on 112 children aged between 2 to 16 years and suffering from type 1 diabetes. The researchers found genetic signs of enterovirus infection in 83% of the children. The study results can prove very beneficial for the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
