When I first started building my own website, I did not think much of the design. I thought that if the website looked nice to me it will be ok. I was far from right. Thirdly, keep in mind that you are more likely to retain a visitor to your website if it has a professional look. One way you can do this is to make sure that you have a consistent design through out the website. You need to keep the background , font colour and size and even the position of some sections, that appaear on every page, the same. This can bemade easier by the use of CSS.
Finally, don't overload your website with too much graphics. Graphics can enhance the look and feel of your site but too many of them can be distracting. In addition, too many graphics will make your website loading time longer. This will put off the visitor and also it has an effect on search engine ranking.
In conclusion, it is important to be sensible when considering the design of your website. Put yourself in the shoes of your visitor and you will see what features are necessary and what are not necessary for your website design. Streamline your website accordingly. Get a friend or family memberto view your site and give feedback to you. I think this will really show how well you have designed your website.
