subject: Slate Roofs For The Safety Conscious [print this page]

Most people don't think about the safety factors of the roofing materials they choose, especially when it concerns fireproof qualities. Slate is one of the most fireproof materials on the market and as such is a perfect choice for those who are interested in a fireproof material and even those who may not have thought about it yet. One problem with many people is they don't like to think about the possibility their homes may catch on fire - at least not from the perspective of their roofing material. In addition they do not usually research the materials they use for their roofs for their fireproof qualities. It is more essential to choose materials that are fire and wind resistant rather than cosmetically sound.

Why would anyone want to choose a material that will be more flammable in case their home should catch on fire? While slate is an attractive material safety considerations should be the first thing on any homeowner's mind. This is especially true if you live in an area where forest fires might be a concern since those fires can pass flames and embers through the air and land on your roof causing a fire. That can then cause the rest of your home to catch on fire if you are not able to get the fire out quickly.

On the other hand if you have a fireproof material such as slate there is less of a possibility of that happening. Its ability to remain in place when high winds occur is another safety consideration as the blowing shingles can cause damage to surrounding structures and injury to anyone in the way of the flying roofing material.
