A lot of people today use the social media sites like classified ads with many different places to post. This is really an abuse of the Social sites like MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook.
These sites were designed to provide a social avenue for people to get to know others with similar interests. However, one can "advertise" themselves, which naturally would advertise one's business as well.
These social sites are much like going to a pub and having a drink. Say you drop into your local pub, get a beer, and take a seat next to a few differen't people. After a short time you and the fellow next to you start up a conversation about baseball because it is playing on the Pub's TV.
After addressing each others likes and dislikes about the game you decide to bring up that you are very interested in Hockey and played it as a kid. After talking about what you love about hockey for a bit, the man you're sitting with goes back to baseball and says, I used to play baseball but work has just gotten in the way. So naturally you are going to ask him about his work. He says he is a general contractor and works 6-7 days a week. Doesn't sound very happy about his job. He goes on about it for a little while and then asks you what you do for work.
Now I know this is not how all conversations go, but I believe the social sites work just like this. You show interest in what another person is showing interest in and the majority of times those people are going to return the favor and show some kind of interest in what you are doing. They may show an interest by taking a look at your at your page, maybe write you a message on your page, or ask you what you do for a living. That's when you send them the link to your sales website, your blog, your twitter page, etc. The people who do really well are those people who show a genuine interest in others.
Content is also another part of doing well with the Social Media sites. If you go and spark a conversation with somebody, which results in that person wanting to know more about you, but you do have any place for that person to go and find out more about you, then you lost an opportunity to use advertise on that social media platform in a way that it was intended to be used.
There are many different ways to display content, ie., videos of the real you, a blog or Facebook, MySpace or Twitter letting people know what is going on in your life. Link them all together so when someone shows interest on your Facebook they can go to all of your other sites.
The internet is called a web for a reason. If you are only connected in one place, it will be hard for someone to find you. However, if you are connected in many places, people will sometimes have to go through you to get to other places. That's when social media is really working for you.
