Dry eye syndrome is a complaint where the eye has to endure insufficient moisture. This arises because the eye is no longer capable of shedding enough tears or is losing too much of it to evaporation.

The first two kinds (EPA and DHA) are the easiest for your body to digest and use, whereas ALA needs to be processed into EPA and DHA before it can be used. This conversion process can sometimes encounter problems. This is why experts advocate eating foods with more EPA and DHA content.

Alpha-linolenic acid can be drawn from plant sources such as leafy green vegetables and vegetable oils. The most plentiful plant-based source is flaxseed oil, which is 57 per cent ALA. The best sources of EPA and DHA are oily, coldwater fish caught from the wild such as tuna, salmon, mackerel, and sardines. Fish oil extracted from these sources is used to make fish oil supplements in capsule form.

One of the most helpful benefits that omega-3 fatty acids deliver to your body is their ability to discourage inflammation. It is well-established that rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory reaction around the joints. Blepharitis springs from inflammation of the eyelids, and Sjgrens syndrome is often expressed through inflamed tear glands. The inflammations associated with these conditions can cause dry eye. Omega-3 fatty acids strengthen your body's ability to manage the inflammation, thereby minimising the occurrence of dry eye.

Aside from suppressing inflammatory activity, omega-3 fatty acids have also been found beneficial to the meibomian glands, which secrete the oily compounds that make up the outer layer of tears. Certain components of omega-3 fatty acid molecules are thought to stimulate adequate production of aqueous tears (the middle layer of tears).

It is important for you to get professional advice omega-3 fatty acid supplements. So far, there is still no universal dose to take for dry eyes. Your doctor's recommendation is essential and should be followed.
