Entrance
The entrance to your home is a perfect place to incorporate a piece of modern furniture. In general, furniture that is "modern" is sleek, minimalist and tends to be either stark black or stark white. When choosing furniture for your entrance, it is best to be as minimalist as possible. Choose perhaps a small, square table that you can place your belongings on when you enter or exit the house. It may be beneficial to also have a small chair in the corner of your entrance. Whatever you do, be sure that you do not crowd the entrance with furniture, no matter how modern or minimalist it may be.
Living Area
Your living or family room is where you really get to delve into modern design. Remember that "modern" is clean, refined and minimalist. It can be tempting to fill a living room with furniture just to take up space, but consider the alternative instead if you truly want your home to look modern. Mixing and matching black and white furniture is a great way to elicit contrast in your living room. For instance, you may wish to have a black leather couch surrounded by white end tables, and perhaps even a glass coffee table to break things up a bit. The more you work with modern furniture, the more you will understand what works and what doesn't.
Glass coffee tables are preferred by many people because they are easy to clean and do not show dust and dirt the way other materials often do. Even if the coffee table is glass, however, you need to make sure that it looks right in the room, as no all will. More often than not, this is determined by the frame of the coffee table. If the frame doesn't match the room, it might be a good idea to look for a different table.
Bedroom
The bedroom is another area where you can have fun with modern design, as it allows you the opportunity to choose from a host of interesting beds that defy tradition in a number of ways. Modern beds tend to be minimalist and will either take the route of blending in with the rest of the room or standing out with an outlandish design flourish; the choice between these two design techniques is up to you, although it should ultimately depend upon how the rest of the room is set up.
Setting up a bedroom can start with the bed, and many people actually prefer to do it this way because it gives them somewhat of a jumping off point. Choose the rest of your bedroom furniture (desk, chairs) to match your bed (or to offset it - whichever would look better), and take care in not overcrowding the room with furniture. After all, there's nothing worse than trying to sleep in a room that feels crowded and claustrophobic.
Bathroom
The bathroom allows you to put your design to work in a different way than the rest of the house. Much of the focus in your bathroom will be on mirrors and furniture such as towel racks and clothing shelves. Many people like to go with a brushed metal design for their bathroom, and often choose modern furniture to match it. While you won't be putting chairs in your bathroom (there are, of course, exceptions to the rule), you'll be choosing furniture that acts mainly as storage for your toiletries and towels. Remember that your goal is to keep the bathroom looking clean, which is why many people go with the brushed metal look.
