My buddy Frank who's a fellow network marketer, calls me up and says I got a hundred leads yesterday. I'm excited so I ask him "That's fantastic! How did you generate them? Pay Per Click, Social Sites, Article Marketing?" Frank tells me he bought them. My voice drops and I say "You did what?" So my buddy goes into this story on how his network marketing company told him to call this reputable lead company. I hear him out and when he's done I ask him "Did you call any of your leads?". He tells me "Yes, I did but a lot of them had changed their phone numbers, didn't sign up on any website to get information on a business opportunity or had already been contacted by other businesses as well. Were their any that got on your presentation call?, I asked. Frank says, "I'm pretty discouraged because only 4 leads got on the presentation call and afterwards one guy was pretty excited but didn't have any money to join the business and the other 3 aren't answering their phones." "For a reputable company, I sure did get some crappy leads."
It's a shame Frank had to go thru that experience but after our conversation I know he'll never repeat it. Like most of us, Frank was only doing what he was taught. An effective marketer always generates their own highly targeted leads. Here are a few strategies if your going the online route.
1. Pay Per Click (PPC) - if you had a budget for purchasing leads from a lead company. You might as well put those advertising dollars to work for you on Google, Yahoo and Bing.
2. Facebook Advertising - you can do this 2 ways. No. 1 - Make and build relationships with like minded folks as yourself and once they know, like and trust you, they'll start asking you what kind of business are you doing (aka Attraction Marketing). Or No. 2 - build a PPC campaign within Facebook itself totally separate from Google and the other search engines. Do this only if you have the advertising budget for it.
3. Video Marketing - This is one of my favorite strategies. Make content rich videos providing solutions for whatever issues other network marketers are facing and post them on different social video sites, for example YouTube, Google Videos, Viddler, etc.
4. Article Marketing - write articles and submit to various online article directories. You can write about anything that brings value to your audience. Write about your opinion on that new keyword research program that just came out on the market or a brief review on that webinar you were on last night.
5. Twitter - do searches for different networkers on twitter and have a conversation with them. Be social and be yourself. Don't invite yourself into a conversation that you have absolutely no knowledge of. More than likely, Twitter folks have Facebook accounts as well so invite them to be friends there to.
Bottom line there's no reason to buy MLM leads from lead generating agencies. Create your own so you can be viewed as a true leader and someone that wants to share value. By generating your own targeted leads, you control the quality of leads you'll receive and you become the leader people want to speak to. However, when you buy your leads you give up that control and appear needy to your prospects and they can sense it over the phone. you'll be able to pass that knowledge to your team so they can be successful too.
