subject: Installing Asphalt Shingle Roofs [print this page] Following a big storm is not uncommon to see roofer crews and their dump trucks lining any residential street. This is especially the case in neighborhoods where the homes are more than 20 years old. Many of these homeowners collect their insurance money and still have to fork over several hundred to install asphalt shingle roofs. Instead of paying out those dollars, how about giving the roofing business a shot? Roofing is really about having the right tools and learning about the installation process, nothing more!
Measuring & Materials
Of course the first step in installing asphalt shingle roofs is to purchase the shingles and other materials needed. There are a variety of shingle types, but one of the most recommended is the fiberglass asphalt shingle, they are easy, durable and look great. In order to measure, you will need the length and width of each side of the roof. The measurements of all the sides is then added and divided by 100, to detail how many shingles will be needed. This is for a straight gable roof, however if there are slopes, dormers or other peaks those need to be measured as well. Roofing nails as well as starter strip, felt and flash molding for the edge of the soffit.
Getting Started
Begin by covering the roof with the felt covering, as this provides a moisture barrier. Next is the starter strip, which is not synonymous with asphalt shingle roofs, however it needs to be put down to ensure that the roof gets started straight. Work your way up to the ridge, overlapping the shingles slightly. Once at the ridge lay the ridge cap singles to make the transition from the front and the back! Remember to work your way up from both sides of the roof, toward the ridge!
