I recently caught up with Danny Dyer while he was promoting the DVD release of Dead Man Running (1st of March). Danny is one of the UK's best loved actors appearing in films such as Human Traffic, Mean Machine, The Business (one of my favorite films), Outlaw, Severence and The Football Factory.
How's life keeping?
Danny Dyer: Yeah I'm sweat as, really good, I'm in a good place at the moment. Proud of the movie, it's come around quite quickly so hopefully it's gonna make a few quid.
The film was a lot of fun, was it fun making it?
Danny Dyer: It was because obviously me and Tamer are pals. We're best mates in the film, it's tough when you've got an actor you've just met and you have to recreate that whole best mate b*llocks. It doesn't always quite work, but with this half the works done with me and him, so it was a laugh. It was a tough shoot as well because we only had 5 weeks to shoot it and we were shooting it November/December time 2008. It was f*cking freezing mate I tell you (laughs). It does get to you a bit that, but I enjoyed it, Alex the director was sweat as a nut, having 50 Cent around, it was a joy, I feel blessed.
You've had some great roles in your films, are there any roles you've had that you'd like to revisit again?
Danny Dyer: It's weird this year because I've got Severance 2 on the table and The Business 2. So it would be nice to recreate the role of Franky, obviously him a few years down the line, he's put on a bit of weight (laughs). I think if we do it, Franky has to be a bit spent and a bit f*cked if it's gonna work. I wouldn't mind doing Human Traffic again with Moff and his later years. But other than that I'm not really a massive fan of the sequel, if the films good leave it at that. A lot of the time the only reason to make a sequel is to make money out of it. I'm all up for trying to do things, opening up a few doors for myself but if The Business 2 does come off it would be a pleasure to do it.
Your involved with so much different things, with the films you've got, the documentaries, is there anything you have'nt done that you'd be interested in doing?
Danny Dyer: I think I tried the documentaries and the presenting side of thing and it were'nt really for me, I earnt a few quid out of it, I did meet a few people but I never really felt fully comfortable doing it. I sometimes watch them back and I cringe at it.
People enjoy them though.
Danny Dyer: Yeah believe me I really appreciate that. It's a snobby business so the snooby c*nts look at it and say what is he doing. But I dunno I've done a radio play, I've done theatre, I've done TV, I've done film, there's not really much for me to try. The voiceover thing there's a few quid to be made in that, I've got a really distinctive voice so there's not really much I could sell. I dunno really I feel bless like I said, I'm not greedy, I'm up for anything really, anything that will test me.
Is there anything people should especially look out for in 2010 from you?
Danny Dyer: Like I said with The Business and that, I might do a play, I done a play last year, I played Sid Vicious, it was a great role, I love playing someone as f*cked up as him, I tell you that gives me a buzz, it f*cked my head up a lot though, my Mrs said I was an absolute nightmare to live with, I don't blame her because you have to remember Sid Vicious stabbed his girlfriend to death, so she was a bit paranoid. It's not that I'm a method actor but if your playing roles like that , you've got to do it justice so I might do that again in the West End for 16 weeks. I've got loads of sh*t going on so fingers crossed I'm gonna pull something out the bag this year that will change peoples perception of me a little bit.
