Smart Use of Social Networking For Artists - How to Chose the Right One

Social Networking. What's the smartest way for an artist to use them? They are presented as the new "must have" for people on the go. No matter what you market, you are told that you MUST be on all the social networking sites. It seems like everyone is doing it! But there are SO many social networking sites to learn. How many hours in a day do you have to learn and devote to it?

Relax. Sure there are a lot of sites out there but they aren't all for everybody. Some of the hype is just that-hype. Some of the articles promoting some of the sites are, in actuality, paid advertising! For the marketing artist one fact alone is critical to know before devoting the time and energy into a site.

Who is your target market?

Who is buying from you now? Are they the same people you will find on a particular site? If so then THAT is the site you want to focus on. Take the time to understand and work the site diligently. Just like blogging, if you cannot devote the appropriate amount of time to it, don't start.

We have researched all the sites. They change as I write this. No one knows what will be the next big wave of communication but one thing we have discovered is that for our needs, as working artists, some sites work far better than others!

So what social networking site works best for us? Facebook. Hands down. MySpace is too teeny bopper and our clients aren't there. Linkedin doesn't do it either. Too vague and suit and tie for these artists! Twitter must pay huge amounts of money to promote itself but in actuality, our clients quickly become annoyed with this site due to too many "tweets". So we do not "twitter" any clients. We post on facebook. All of our clients and prospects have the option of becoming "our friends" and vice versa. It's not random. We post a few sentences, recent works, congratulations or happy birthdays....we build that relationship. And they respond. We are not on the site to sell. We are there to help them get to know us and what we do better. People buy from people like them. Really. And eventually we see results from building that trust. Some friends do order. Some email. But they all see our new art pieces as we post them and can comment. Many of the comments are testimonials. And some of our prospects respond quicker to facebook than their email.

The point in any social networking site is to invite people to get to know you. Some sites are better suited than others for that. But by knowing your target market and where they gather on the social networking sites you are clearing the way for better relationships with those clients. And that leaves you more time to paint!
