subject: Grass Types And Mowing [print this page]

Most people mow their grass to keep it looking neat and tidy. What they never realize is that the length of the grass can affect the health as well as additional water requirements! Seems like a stretch, however according to professionals each type of grass has their own "needs" as far as water, length and nutrients. Different grass types are healthier, look better and grow better if they are kept at a certain length! Here is a little more about a few grass types and how close they should be cut.

What's The Big Deal

Now most take the attitude of what's the big deal about the length of the grass in the front yard? Then they wonder why their yard is not as green or thick, as their neighbors. There are other factors, such as fertilizing, soil and watering, but the length of the grass can make a huge difference. Allowing the grass to grow a little longer, helps to establish a good root system which in turns makes a prettier yard. Keeping the grass cut too short can actually hinder growth and allow for weeds to germinate, slowly taking over the yard. So, as you can see the length does make a difference, and for those looking for lush grass, the appropriate length should be considered.

Grass Types & Appropriate Heights

There are certainly too many grass types to name each and every one; however the most common ones can be. Grass such as fescue, Saint Augustine and buffalo should never be mowed lower than 2 inches. Bent Grass should be left at about a 1 inch length, while Blue Grama should be 2 1/2 inches long. Grass types such as bent grass need only be about a inch, due to thatch susceptibility.
