From Sundials to Contemporary Clocks

The utility of clocks as a way to keep us on track, is apparent everywhere. There are clocks on our computers and cable boxes, dashboards and stoves. Alarm clocks blink out the time beside our beds unless we use the alarm on our watches or iPhones or similar device. Time is everywhere and everywhere we are reminded of time.

In our contemporary world, time rules. I don't know about you but I don't like being that aware of time, but digital clocks blinking out the time have become part of the background of our daily lives.

I grew up in a house full of clocks. Most of them didn't keep particularly good time. They were all old clocks. My father bought grandfather clocks and mantle clocks. My mother owned gold desk clocks that dated back to the late 19th century.

If clocks were ever designed just for telling time, they certainly aren't now. I think clocks have always been about style. As accents or focal points, clocks are major elements of design.

Clocks today come in all kinds of styles from the classic to the ultra contemporary. Then there are the novelty clocks which are just plain fun. They come as desk clocks, wall clocks or standing clocks, and they come in all sizes from miniature to oversized.

There is an endless array of choices when it comes to buying clocks. You are only limited by your imagination. Just be sure to include at least one designer clock in the mix of your home decor.
