subject: Gutters: What Is The Truth About These Systems? [print this page]

Gutters are now available in a wide range of designs and styles. Some of the newest models feature what is called a "guard" or a "shield." These are screens or other devices placed over the top of the actual gutter opening. The goal of these is to reduce the amount of debris that gets into the gutters and therefore help prevent any gutter repair needs. By keeping the leaves out, the companies claim, your job is easier to do. Do these work? Before you consider them for gutter installation for your home, keep a few things in mind.

Gutters can be quite cost effective investments in the home and it would seem that the installation of these guards can be a great thing. However, you do have to consider how well they work. Since there are so many products on the market, an independent view is necessary before you consider these for gutter installation. Here are some things to look for specifically.

- Is the entryway for the water to enter open enough? If the shield or guard is a solid piece of plastic or another material, it may not allow for fast moving, heavy loads of water to flow easily into it. This may mean that the leaves stay out but so does the water.

- Do find out about the gutter's long-term effectiveness. You want to avoid expensive gutter repair on systems that do not hold up to all of the elements, including snow, ice and heavy wind and rain.

When it comes to gutters, there is no doubt that keeping the leaves out is important. Before you can invest in these systems, though, you need to know their effectiveness.
