Aerobic Step Exercises

Aerobic exercise refers to that kind of exercise which requires lots of repetitive body movements that are done in quick succession and thus help burn fat and lots of calories. Step aerobics is a variety of aerobic exercise which consists of simply doing repetitive movements on a step. These exercises burn a lot of fat, they're really good at toning the legs, and can be a lot of fun, especially when you listen to music as you exercise.

These exercises do not require any weights or any special equipment of any kind, just a step, or preferably a set of small exercise steps so you can adjust the height you're working with. However you can incorporate weights if you're looking for a more intense exercise, holding dumbbells in your hands, for example, provide a more intense workout and also help tone your arms. These exercises are very simple and can therefore be done completely unsupervised, but if you are looking for more advanced stuff there are many classes which focus specially on step aerobics. We'll quickly look at four different step exercises, but there are dozens of other ones out there.

Before beginning any step aerobic workout, or any aerobic workout for that matter, make sure you warm up for ten minutes. Don't underestimate the importance of warming up; you should never skip a warm up.

Grapevine: This exercise doesn't require the platform yet. Simply step to the side with one foot, and then bring your other foot behind and past your lead foot. Now step with your lead foot off the side again, and bring the other foot next to the lead foot. Now continue the exercise from where you started.

A Step: This exercise involves the platform, and is done in four simple counts which form the letter A. Place the platform to in front of your at to the side for this exercise. Step on the center of the platform with your left foot, then bring your right foot onto the platform. Now step down on the opposite side of the platform as before with your lead foot and bring the other foot down next to it, then begin again going the other way.

Basic Left Step: This step involves a sideways movement. Begin by stepping up onto the platform with your lead foot, then bring your other foot up onto it. Now step your down with your other foot and then being your lead floor onto the floor, and repeat.

For more advanced steps try out a step class at your local gym or health and fitness centre. Step aerobics is a great way to get toned and to have fun.
