The Internet is filled with a tremendous amount of information on just about any subject. One thing that I have noticed is that there really is not clear information about certain technical devices that may need a little clarification before deciding to make a purchase. In particular, I am referring to the choice to purchase a universal remote control. Today, just about any piece of entertainment device comes with a "smart" remote that you can use for universal purposes. The problem with most of them is they can be a little time consuming to get programmed correctly, and they usually are not 100% accurate.
The best advice that I can give is to not bother trying to figure these devices out. It may just be in your best interest to find a universal remote that is stand alone. Before you run out to the store, you may want to list some of the things that you are looking for.
1) Do an inventory count of the products that you own and want to control.
2) Note the manufacturer name and model number of each piece of equipment. You will need this for programming purposes.
3) Know if you are looking for IR or RF to control your equipment. (IR stands for "Infrared". This is the most common and found in 99% of any remote. You are more familiar with this than you might think. RF stands for "radio frequency". This application is mainly used if your equipment is placed in a cabinet or a rack that is behind a closed door.)
4) Ability for updates. With the way technology is constantly changing, you don't want to get stuck with something that will become obsolete after a few short years.
5) Ease of use. (This should really be at the top, but unless you know how much equipment you are going to control, this could change.) Consider your wife or guests that may use it. The remote shouldn't be too complicated for the "average Joe".
6) The last thing that I look at is the aesthetics. It needs to look as good as it performs.
There are many products to choose from. Knowing what your needs are can really shorten the list of possibilities. Always make sure that whatever you choose to purchase has a good warranty, which should go without saying. I hope that this article has helped you even if you already knew this stuff!
