How Not to Use Social Media
How Not to Use Social Media

Spam has become a big issue with search engines, ezine article post sites and most of all social networks. So how do you avoid becoming a spammer? The first step is to participate and contribute to the places you register with. Be polite and use one rule of thumb, "If you do like people doing it to you, then they will not like you doing it to them." I am writing this article because of a foolish mistake I made recently.

I am new to the whole online affiliate and MLM marketing game and like many I wanted to get the word out as soon as possible so I joined Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and a few blogs. At first I started posting nonchalant ads with my banner ads and text links but after a short while I began to go nuts and started posting ads anywhere I could and making the armature mistake of hooking up my Twitter account with Facebook. I received a message from a friend of mine that simply stated; Hi Dave I think you have been hacked because there is a lot of spam popping up on your page. This blew my mind; all of my advertising with Twitter was going out to all my friends and family. Talk about red ink on the face, needless to say I quickly found the settings for changing the permissions and turned off Twitter updates to Facebook.

Getting your message in front of people is very important but taking your time to put your message in front of the correct audience is even more important. Please learn from my mistake and don't spam. Use your social network as a social network. Make friends and business acquaintances and simply fill them in on what you have accomplished in your business as you go along. What I mean is tell them about the new article you spent an hour on that was recently posted, let them know when you have a press release. Be kind and let them know that your company just offered you a huge discount at a local store and invite them to share the savings. Be a friend and a business associate; NOT a sales person.

Twitter is a whole different animal as far as placing ads. They seem to enjoy and thrive from it. When an individual has 76,000 followers on Twitter he has a greater chance to make a decent living from posting ads every 30 seconds or so because the posts are streaming and never slow down. By the time you read one there are 20 more posts waiting for you to read. I use my account for everything from telling the world that I have a new ezine out there to "hey just went to the store."

Next I want to talk about MySpace. I am not that familiar with this program yet because at first glance it seems to be for kids mostly. Then as I began to research it I started finding more and more businesses and affiliate network groups posting blogs and sharing information as well as selling their ideas and systems. I like the video aspect of this site because you can embed your own ad video right onto your page. I am planning to start a page on MySpace just for my business and for people like myself to share ideas and information with each other. Unlike a forum you can have an mp3 file play a conference call for your friends or post a video to some event you attended to let everyone know what you have been up to.

In conclusion it is my humble opinion that if a site is labeled as a social site and all you signed up for is to advertise your business you should take a moment to rethink your strategy. Facebook, MySpace and all the others out there are for keeping in touch with friends and not for advertisers to recruit others. Whil
