Dear Jane: I heard that silica powder can cause Silicosis. Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder and Sheer Miracle Extreme CloseUp Mineral Finishing Powder both list their HD powder ingredients as as 100% mineral silica powder. Are these products dangerous to lung health? Are either of them going to cause Silicosis if I breath them? Both of them do create a little dust in the air when you open the jar/apply them.
Answer:
Some Background Info
If you aren't familiar with Silicosis, it's a lung condition caused when crystalline silica is repeatedly inhaled. Crystalline silica is a chemical which is toxic to the lining of the lungs and causes a strong inflammatory response. Over time this inflammation causes the lung tissue to become thickened and scarred. Silicosis symptoms include chronic dry cough, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, sleep problems and finger nails with a bluish tint.
Silica in Mineral Makeup
Luckily for those who love mineral makeup, the kind of silica powder used in cosmetics is not a problem. Hydrated silica (a.k.a. silicone dioxide) is a mineral used in many mineral makeup products including Makeup Forever HD and Sheer Miracle Extreme CloseUp HD. This type of silica DOES NOT react with lung tissue like the crystalline form does so these products are safe to use. Safety information on hydrated silica can be found at: Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety Database
Bottom Line
Hydrated silica (silicone dioxide) used in mineral makeup formulations IS NOT the same as crystalline silica that causes lung problems. So breathe easy you can continue enjoying your fabulous HD powders.
