Key Highlights
The Ukraine is expected to invest US$12.7 billion in the military throughout the forecast period
Throughout the review period, Ukrainian defense expenditure increased at a CAGR of 8.70%, and in 2010, valued an estimated US$1.7 billion. During the forecast period, defense expenditure is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.37%, to reach US$2.6 billion by 2015. This increase is primarily a result of tensions between the Ukraine and Russia, the acquisition of new defense systems and the countrys participation in international peacekeeping missions.
Ukraines defense expenditure is closely correlated to overall economic growth, and as a consequence of the financial crisis, defense expenditure experienced a double digit decline in 2009. As a percentage of GDP, average Ukrainian defense expenditure during 200409 stood at 1.3%; however, during the forecast period, defense expenditure is expected to reduce to an average of 1.1% of the countrys GDP. The reduction in defense expenditure as a percentage of GDP can be attributed to a relatively higher GDP growth rate.
