Former Michigan State running back Ashton Leggett pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor assault and battery and received a plea deal to dismiss a count of conspiracy during a pre-trial hearing this morning at 54-B District Court in East Lansing. Leggett, who has transferred to Illinois State, admitted to punching two men at an Iota Phi Theta fraternity potluck at MSUs Rather Hall on Nov. 22. The pre-trial hearings for eight others B.J. Cunningham, JMichael Deane, Mark Dell, Roderick Jenrette, Chris L. Rucker, Fred Smith, Jamiihr Williams and Glenn Winston were adjourned until later dates. A court representative did not give dates for their hearings, but Ruckers attorney, Leon Weiss of Southfield, said his clients new hearing is Feb. 25. I would just like to apologize for my actions, Leggett told Judge David Jordon. As a group, we werent thinking, and we did not fully understand that we would jeopardize our futures like this. So on behalf of me and the others, I would just like to apologize and ask for forgiveness. Leggetts attorney, Hugh Clarke, said that the Ingham County prosecutor did not recommend jail time for his client. He could face up to 93 days in jail, plus court costs. Ruckers attorney said his client had entered not-guilty pleas to counts of misdemeanor assault and battery and conspiracy to commit assault. Were going to continue doing discovery, and well come back next month and try to arrive at some sort of resolution, Weiss said. Rucker, a junior cornerback, was suspended following the incident but is back with the team. Cunningham, Deane, Dell and Smith also were suspended but have been reinstated. Jenrette and Winston were dismissed from the team. Williams has transferred. Damian Anthes, whom the court appointed to represent Jenrette a day before the hearing, said he wanted to take more time to review the case. He said the prosecutor had made an offer, but Jenrette did not make a plea. I was just appointed to represent Mr. Jenrette yesterday and just received the police information today, Anthes said. Weve got several things to look at between now and then. Jenrette is facing three counts of misdemeanor assault or assault and battery, and one count of conspiracy to commit assault and battery. He also could have a case of felony burglary from his hometown of Tampa reopened as a result of his involvement in the Rather Hall incident. Jenrette is not enrolled at MSU but is living in the area, Anthes said. He added that Jenrette has been contacted by other schools and is looking to continue his football career. Winston is facing two counts of misdemeanor assault or assault and battery, along with a conspiracy charge. His attorney, Brandon Buchanan, declined to comment about the case as he left the court. On the night of Nov. 22, about 90 minutes after MSUs season-ending banquet, witnesses said 15 to 20 men stormed into an Iota Phi Theta potluck. Witnesses told police that some of the men assaulted and injured attendees, including some women. Iota Phi Theta is one of nine historically black fraternities and sororities at MSU. It does not have its own house, so it often holds events in dorms. Karl Price, the fraternitys national president, has said there had been an ongoing feud between Iota Phi Theta members and the football team. MSU Police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said Wednesday that the investigation into the Rather Hall incident is ongoing and that two more men still have yet to be identified.
