Located in Holland, Amsterdam is the largest city of the Netherlands. It is known for many things, such as its canals, the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, Cannabis Cup, the red-light district and more.
Amsterdam is not really a very large city by comparison, so it is fairly easy to navigate. It does, however, have a big city feel with all the things to do and the diversity among the people. There is so much culture and nightlife, touring the city is non stop fun. A canal cruise is an easy and memorable way to see the sights of Amsterdam. The cruises go all day and into the night with sunset and nighttime cruises.
Amsterdam is also a city that is extremely pedestrian-friendly. There are many things you might miss while driving or riding that you can see by taking one of the many quaint streets through the city. Walk along the bridges and watch the boats pass along the canal, and stroll over to the open air markets to make a deal that can't be beat with the local vendors. You can also rent bikes all throughout the city if you wish to park your rental car for awhile.
(A little FYI for the first time traveler, if you come across a "coffeeshop" the thing they are not selling is coffee; they are selling cannabis and hashish. If you are looking to have a nice cup of Joe, you will want to look for a caf instead.)
If you are in town from late March - mid May and are feeling a little adventurous and are willing to take a little drive, rent a car and drive to Lisse to visit the Keukenhof. Keukenhof is also known as the Garden of Europe and is the world's largest flower garden with as many as 7 million flower bulbs are planted each year. As Holland is famous for its tulips, the best time to see the tulips is around the middle of April.
Amsterdam has a fairly cool climate and never gets too hot in the summers nor does it get unbearably cold in the winter. This makes Amsterdam ideal for travel at any time of the year, as long as you bring your jacket!
