Long Island Toyota dealers such as Atlantic Toyota and Huntington Toyota are excited to see the new Plug-in Prius take its place on the streets of New York City. Toyota Corp is partnering with the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and the Port Authority of New York as five Toyota Plug-in Prius vehicles will be given to New York City as part of the U.S. Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle demonstration program.
With the expected official release date of the Toyota Plug-in Prius to Long Island Toyota dealers like Atlantic Toyota and Huntington Toyota being in 2012, Toyota Corp has begun its demonstration program to test the new Prius in different conditions and get it ready for its commercial delivery date. By adding two Plug-in Prius Hybrid vehicles to the NYCDOT and three to the Port Authority, Toyota is looking to expand its demonstration program and help NYC with its plan to be greener while also getting real-world driving data to better understand what other steps may be needed to make these vehicles more efficient.
"We're charging down the road to a greener, greater New York, and thanks to Toyota's innovative new plug-in technology, we'll be able to charge up along the way," said NYCDOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan in a press release. "Working alongside our car-sharing pilot, we hope this demonstration program will also help reduce the environmental impact of our operations on New York City's streets."
New York City, like most Long Island Toyota dealers, is looking for new ways to lower its carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. The partnership between NYC and Toyota will help the city reach its goal of lowering its carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030.
More than 600 Toyota Plug-in Prius Hybrids are being released into the global market, 160 in the U.S., as part of the demonstration program. The Plug-in Prius can be charged in about three hours with a 110-volt outlet and as fast as 90 minutes with a 220-volt connection. The hybrid can run on electricity for about 13 miles up to 62 miles per hour before switching back to the normal operating mode of a Prius Hybrid vehicle.
Atlantic Toyota and Huntington Toyota are anticipating the official release of the Toyota Plug-in Prius and are excited to watch as greener technology grows and becomes more efficient. Both Long Island Toyota dealers can't wait to share the new Plug-in Prius Hybrid vehicles with their customers.
