Now that Lost has finally drawn to a close, many viewers are left stumped and even troubled by the finale - and some are wondering why they even liked the show in the first place. Unfortunately, many Lost fans have deemed the final episode not worth the wait, but that doesn't mean the incredible popularity of the show throughout its run should be forgotten. Lost was one of those shows that rose to inexplicable fame for reasons difficult to discern. Just what about it was so good?
Well, one reason so many people liked it was one of the biggest themes of the show - its intrigue. It's human nature to be curious, and when our curiosity is constantly challenged and only satisfied piece by piece, a little at a time, and often leaving even more gaping questions left open, it's only natural to feel anxious to know what happens next. We don't like being left in the dark when there's a riddle to be solved, and we certainly don't enjoy being made to wait - but it's undeniable that anticipation is a pleasurable pain and more than enough reason for millions of viewers to tune in week after week in the hopes that some of the show's mysterious questions would get answered.
Another reason Lost became so popular was simple familiarity and human attachment. The longer people watched it, the more they got to know the characters in such a way that, had Lost been a movie, the director, writers and cast never would've gotten across. With days of time available to reveal the true natures of the characters rather than a measly two hours, Lost really got to explore its characters in depth, letting the viewers discover their favourites naturally - meaning they got attached and began to care about them. Wanting to know what happened next to their beloved favourite characters was, again, more than enough reason to keep tuning in.
What else made Lost great? Perhaps the excellent writing, direction and cast had something to do with it, as well as the intriguing format that was so different to all of the other TV shows available at the time. In any case, Lost was a show that won't be forgotten any time soon, even if the ending supposedly isn't that great. It certainly won't stop people signing up to free Sky TV in order to see it for themselves, and make their own judgements.
