Is it Difficult for you to Sustain even a Walk?

When one comes to physician in forties or fifties with weakness in ankle or wrists, generally they could be fractures, but the fact that is ignored is bones could be thin or weak to sustain even a walk or lifting objects.

Osteopenia refers to thin bones & it may lead to more grave form which is osteoporosis. Usually, at 4th & 5th decade bones mass declines, thickness of bones is reduced, so there is bone loss.

Following are risk factors that predispose to osteopenia:-

Thin statured female

Smoking

Living unhealthy lifestyle

Alcoholism

Not having too much of calcium in daily diet.

Early menopause

When there is history of anorexia nervosa.

What leads to osteoporosis

When there is too much of reabsorption of old bones or body cannot form new bone it leads to osteopenia.

For normal bone formation phosphorus & calcium intake is required and if their intake in diet is not sufficient production of bone is at risk.

Also genetic predisposition, unhealthy lifestyle, intake of steroids for long term add to risk factors of osteopenia.

Very first sign of osteopenia is broken bone.

And in early stages of osteopenia symptons are not painful or debilitating. In later stages, there could be fracture of wrist/hips or vertebrae. There could be bone pain, tenderness and stooped posture.

Diagnosis of osteopenia is done by bone mineral density and dexa scan which results in measurement called T-score. T-score between -1.0&-2.5 point out towards osteopenia.

As people grow older bone loses minerals, heaviness & so bones become weaker which leads to breaking of bones.Osteopenia does not only mean bone loss but at times people have low bone density which also refers to osteopenia.

Also through personal history physician can trace causes if one has been an athlete and has amenorrhea or if there is error in metabolism which do not allow body to take in & use vitamins & minerals.

Osteopenia can be treated by tracing causes of osteopenia.Proper nutrition, balanced diet, natural supplements & natural hormonal supplements should be advised to people suffering or at risk of osteopenia.
