subject: Types Of Breast Implants In La [print this page]

Breast augmentation surgery counts on the functional reliability of breast implants for the success of each and every surgery. In the search for the perfect synthetic substitute, many different types of implants have been devised and tried over the years.

Saline Implants

Saline implants were first invented in the 1964. These prosthetics are filled with salt water, which serves as a safety feature should the bags spring a leak inside a human body. Salt water leakage is generally harmless as compared to more foreign substances. They were very popular in LA during the 1990s because of restrictions then in place against silicone gel implants. One of their main advantages is since they are only filled with liquid once inside the patient, smaller incisions are needed in order to install the prosthetics.

Silicone Gel Implants

Silicone gel implants were invented in 1961. There have been numerous versions introduced over the years to deal with the safety and performance issues that plagued the early variants.

First and second generation models had a host of complaints that triggered their eventual re-design. The Los Angeles breast implants that were done during this period had a high incidence of bag ruptures and gel-bleeding. It triggered a host of law suits that led to the strict regulation of silicone prosthetics for many years. One effort to defeat these weaknesses involved the development of double implant combinations. These were essentially silicone bags placed inside a bigger saline bag. The aim was marry the more natural feel of a silicone gel with the safety and adjustability of salt water implants. Unfortunately this more complicated design choice proved to be more prone to breakage and defects.

In the 1980s, the implants were redesigned twice to better resist bag failures and punctures. These types of Los Angeles breast implants had better gel cohesion, felt more natural and had a much lower failure rate than before.

Currently, the fifth and latest generation of silicone gel implants is being currently tested all over the United States. Los Angeles breast implants trials are happening right now to evaluate their characteristics. This model uses an innovative semi-solid design in order to mitigate the risk of silicone migration and bag rupture.
