Thyme is a famous herb and belongs to the genus thymus. One should know that common thyme, Thymus vulgaris, and few species have the usage as culinary herbs along with medicinal purposes.

So in this way ancient Egyptians were using thyme for embalming. In the same way ancient Greeks have the usage of thyme in baths and burning it as incense in the temples having the faith that thyme is a source of courage. It is believed that the prevalency of thyme throughout Europe act as blessing for Romans. Romans used thyme as a source of purifying rooms for act of "give an aromatic flavour to cheese and liqueurs". In European Middle Ages, thyme herb was kept under the pillows to aid sleep and get rid off nightmares. In those times women used to give knights and warriors thyme leaves as gifts as it is believed to be a source of courage. Thyme was also used to kept on coffins during funerals as it gives the assurance of passage into the next life.

One should know that Thyme is largely cultivated because of its strong flavour as thyme carries thymol in it. Thyme is mostly cultivated in a hot sunny weather having drained soil. It is generally planted in the spring and thereafter grows as a perennial. Thyme is propagated through seed, cuttings, and by dividing rooted sections of the plant. Thyme can tackle drought comfortably . The thyme plants can take deep freezes which grows wildly on mountain highlands. Thyme retains its flavour on drying in comparison to other herbs found in the market.

Thyme is a good source of iron because of this largely having the usage in cooking. Thyme is mostly act as the main herb ingredient in many countries cuisines such as Greek, Lebanese, Italian, French, Albanian, Persian, Portuguese, Libyan, Spanish, Syrian, and Turkish etc. It is also largely used in Arab and Caribbean cuisines. Thyme is oftenly used to give flavour to meats, soups and stews and on many eatable products. Thyme carries a specific affinity and is a primary flavour among lamb, tomatoes and eggs. While doing flavourful process the thyme doesnot get overpower letting it to blends well with many herbs and spices. One should know that thyme is purchased both fresh and dried. The fresh form of thyme is most flavourful and the storing life is hardly more than a week. So one shoul d have a deep knowledge about thyme before making the best usage of thyme as till now it has not shown any side effects.
