subject: Being Kind To Your Household Vacuum Cleaners [print this page]

Depending on the make and model, household vacuum cleaners are not necessarily industrial-strength. For this reason, it is advisable to exhibit prudent care and responsibility when operating these home-based machines. By misuse, breakage and damage to other valuables can occur, but used properly, household vacuum cleaner are an asset to every home.

When you begin to operate the unit, before turning on the power switch, ensure that the floor height setting is set to match the surface it will be cleaning. Some work on a range of settings from bare floor to shag carpeting. At any rate, do not operate household vacuum cleaners on the incorrect setting. Two things are prevented by doing this properly - damage to the unit and an incomplete cleaning job.

Always change the bag or bagless storage container before it is completely full. When it approaches its maximum capacity, it will begin to reject additional dirt and debris. When this happens, build-up within the machine may start to occur, which means you will need to open up and clean out the inner parts of the unit. In order to prevent this from happening, make a habit of changing the bag or bagless storage container when it's between half and three-quarters full. Problem solved!

Next, do not ever run over items that you know from common sense household vacuums cleaner are not intended to pick up. The examples are too many to list here, but include all metal objects from coins to office supplies, anything stringy or long which will wrap around the roller bar and prevent it from spinning and anything larger than a pea.

Do not attempt to use household vacuum cleaners to pick up liquid spills or very wet items unless the manufacturer has specially designed your particular model to handle such things (in the case of a wet-dry vac, for instance). Damage to the unit may occur and the manufacturer's warranty may be voided if you misuse your machine and don't follow their instructions and precautions included with purchase.

Again, a household vacuum cleaner is a wonderful piece of equipment that cleans floors and carpeting far better than a conventional broom and dust pan and to add to that its also saves you time. However, it is important to follow some basic guidelines such as those listed here and those, again, included in the paperwork included in the manufacture's box at the time of sale.
