Web development : Let's optimize the site

Our next few posts will dispel a number of SEO myths that have been plaguing our efforts to teach and educate America to have a transparent and clear understanding of what SEO is really all about. Additionally, let me also take a moment to encourage you to pick up the phone, and ask one of our search engine optimization experts about anything here, or anything else you might have heard regarding search engine optimization.

Hyphenated domain names are best for SEO and will improve your page rank and position

As in: new-pulse-management-search-engine-optimization-and-web-design.com. There's some truth to this in the site structure, and especially in blogging, but not in the actual domain itself. For example, in the rest of the URL after the .com/ it's a useful tactic, but the domain itself doesn't need to be hyphenated. In fact, it really in our opinion just makes domains themselves harder to type, hinders the email address (because it's harder to type and remember) and confuses people. It becomes instantly obvious when we examine where it came from. One person who recognized that separating page addresses or blogs with dashes or underscores makes them easier to pick up based on keywords, so someone ultimately decided maybe it would work for the domain too. One thing leads to another, it goes viral, and everyone thinks they should be hyphenating their main domain. Simply not true. Ask our search engine optimization specialists how to implement the hyphens or underscores to get the recognition, but certainly, don't go reserving any weird hyphenated URL's.

Great Content = Great Rankings.

This is about as true as amazing uniforms equaling talented players. We've all seen them. The tennis player who kind of stinks but uses a brand new ball for every serve. The first time golfer with the limited edition $1000 dollar driver. He's wearing all Nike everything, a Tiger Woods hat, brand new $4 PROV1 golf balls, and shanks his drive onto the neighboring fairway. The true reality with SEO is that although content is important to ranking (by way of its frequency within the body of the page as related to your subject content) it doesn't simply equate to positive rankings. Our team of search engine optimization experts can get you headed in the right direction if you want.

SEO should be owned and managed by IT.

Although the implementation of SEO has its roots in the web development and IT departments of most companies, it's a marketing discipline more than a web development discipline. Hire experts that specialize in it, as it must be examined at this point, as its own specialized industry. As much as some people (mostly those around as long as the Brontosaurus) like to think that computers' is an industry, they're not. They are a tool and a technology. At this point, they're capable of everything from music editing, to graphic design, to simple word processing, to SEO. Accountability for effective SEO might be multi-departmental in execution, but the reality is that most company budget's, manage SEO programs as a part of customer acquisition, i.e. marketing and sales. Do not let IT (or your Velociraptor friend) lead your SEO programs. IT is the wingman for Marketing when it comes to SEO. Hire professionals and search engine optimization experts who have devoted their employment lives to learning and executing what works. New Pulse Management can certainly help in this regard.
