Handling Stress Before A Test

The Good vs. The Bad

A general assumption is that stress is always a negative thing. This is wrong on many levels, as there are times where some types of stress before testing can prove to be a useful tool for a student. In the same way stress will push an individual to work harder at their job, tests prove to push and motivate students to put forth the best effort they are able to, enabling heightened end results. Being able to identify the good stress from the bad stress is very important in the student's academic life.

Although slight stress will push a student to excel in their studies, an overwhelming sense of stress will cause the students anxieties to lessen their self confidence in the testing arena. Lack of relaxation will block their ability to retain or recall information imperative to the test itself. Following with these unfortunate side effects, a student may also find their problem solving skills impaired due to high anxiety or stress, ending in a less than acceptable grade to the student or their family members.

How Can I Reduce Stress and Anxiety?

There are several tips one may follow to reduce the stress and anxiety level before a test. First and foremost, do not cram! Studying all of your materials the night before will leave any student tired, and more stressed; be sure to study in small sessions over the course of several days. If the student is fearsome about the test itself, have the student take one or two practice tests before the actual examination. This will raise their self confidence levels during the actual test, and they will have practiced test time management and not feel rushed throughout it. Both of these two tips are important, but perhaps one of the most crucial tips is to get a good night's rest before the test as lack of sleep will only add to anxiety levels.

By following these tips, and applying them to their studying habits, a student will be an increased risk of success as well as having less stress and anxiety before and during the examination itself. By sleeping, studying in a spaced out manner, and even taking practice tests, the student will feel confident, revitalized, and ready to take on the test.
