Everyone suffers from body and foot odor at one stage in their lives or the other. For many, it's nothing that a bit of deodorant wouldn't take care of, but for others it can be a bit more daunting than that. Poor hygiene may not be the culprit, although this would be the normal assumption. It's just that some of us just simply sweat more than others and there's very little we can do about it. Or isn't there?
This was the dilemma that I was faced with for a good 8 years. Yes, it really did take me that long to tackle the problem, mainly because I just wasn't aware of it. And when I found out that I did have an issue, I placed far too much emphasis on the problem and made it more of a psychological issue than anything else. So, can you sweat just by thinking about it? Absolutely, yes! The body harbours more emphasis on the signals received by our brains than you can ever imagine. For example, a few years ago the Harvard Medical School went on an expedition to Tibet to find out more about the power of the mind and its correlation to how the body functions. The monks in Tibet wore nothing more than their robes even in the coldest of days and in one experiment they were given robes drenched in ice cold water to wear. And within a few short hours of wearing these wet robes and meditating, the robes were found to be bone dry. It is not that the monks had any special powers as such; it's just that their minds were well trained & cultivated to the point that they could literally use their minds to control their own body temperature. We don't have to do much in order to bring about a cold. We just have to think it into existence. And that's precisely what people do when they are felling stressed and extremely anxious. The reason why I share this information is that although there are medical conditions that do cause excessive sweating, I strongly believe that our thoughts play an enormous role in surfacing the problem a bit more, through the emphasis we give it.
We'll come to the topic on how to get your thoughts under control to prevent some of this excessive sweating a short while later, but for now let's meet the problem head on and see what we can do from a medicinal and hygienic point of view.
Let's start with the shoes you wear. Are they fully lined with leather insoles and do they provide good ventilation? Leather insoles are ideal for sweaty feet and these shoes must further accommodate good air circulation to keep your feet cool for the most part. You must also make it a practise to wear 100% cotton socks at all times. It would be ideal to carry an extra pair of cotton socks with you wherever you go. When you change socks, be sure to wipe your feet (and in between your toes) with a bit of cotton wool lightly dabbed in surgical spirit and place the used socks in a tied shopping bag.
When taking a shower, use a moderately effective soap, making sure to scrub your feet and between the toes briskly and briefly. When I say briefly, I must mention that they need to be thoroughly attended to, but just don't spend too much time as you normally would. Some individuals have sore feet and we need to be as gentle and loving as possible to our feet, otherwise they truly can work against us. Pat dry after the shower and soak them in 2-3 litres of warm water, accompanied with 5-6 drops of Pure Essential Tea Tree oil. Pat dry once more and leave them out in the open air for about an hour. Use open air rubber slippers whenever possible and this shouldn't be an issue. Then spray on a bit of overnight antiperspirant onto both feet and between the feet before going to bed. Although many such overnight antiperspirants are available through your local chemist, it would be best to consult with your Family Doctor to find out your most viable option.
After the morning shower, be sure to very briefly wipe between your toes and soles with a bit of cotton wool, again lightly dabbed in surgical spirit. Only use overnight antiperspirant for 3 consecutive nights prior to going to bed and from then on switch to using it just once a week. The overnight antiperspirant can be used to eliminate armpit odor as well. But use sparingly, as they are generally pretty strong stuff.
Soak your socks in a warm water and tea tree oil solution prior to washing, until the condition improves. Tea Tree oil, not only deals with foot odor, but it also tackles most fungal infections as well, including athlete's foot. The brand of tea tree oil or surgical spirit you use is entirely up to you but one important thing to note, is that the tea tree oil you use must be 100% concentrated and not a dilute.
If you really must, use an everyday dry antiperspirant during the day for the added assurance, but refrain from using powders or odor eliminators of any sort with your shoes or socks as this can get you in a very 'sticky' situation during the day. Even if the feet feel a bit moist during the day, try not to think about it. The fact that they are sweaty don't necessary mean they are smelly. In fact, it is the process of excessive thinking that can trigger the smell.
And as for controlling your thoughts in order to keep your sweating under control, here's a simple breathing exercise called the 'relaxation response'.
