Do you believe in the value of what you are promoting? How confident are you that what you market will be useful and satisfying to your clients - that you are truly needed? How well are you maintaining those beliefs in difficult times? Because new solo law practitioners can go through disillusionment as they start their practice, they must maintain their belief in their value and their optimism about succeeding.
When you are starting a solo law practice, you tend to be all eager, ready to take on the world, and sure of yourself even though you are not yet sure of the ins and outs of conducting business. Then when the gloss wears off and you are embroiled in creating a marketing campaign and structuring your business systems, you may feel less convinced of your abilities in starting the practice.
At this point it is easy for you to under-value yourself and what you are marketing.
Beginning to market your solo practice is not easy, but it is easier to market it if you maintain your belief in your value to prospects. If you saw your own expertise, experience, and resources in another individual, you would be favorably impressed. Your initial business difficulties do not diminish that.
Those attributes, qualities, skills, abilities, and talents which happen to belong to you are valuable and worthy no matter to whom they belong or what obstacles you meet. That is, even if you feel anxious, questioning, or depressed at the moment, you are not an impostor when you present yourself as a unique, needed, and desirable asset to your potential clients.
If you do not appreciate yourself for all you have to offer, no one else will. You project the degree of your self-appreciation in your look, approach, words, and behavior. If you believe you are the solution to your prospects' problems, and if you confidently make it known to prospects that you want to share your solutions with them, you will see positive results.
According to Dr. Martin Seligman, optimism for success is your best predictor for your actual on-the-job success. What his research has shown is that the way you explain your life events can predict and determine your future. People with a positive attitude about themselves, no matter what, are more likely to shrug off the bad and be persistent.
Your experiencing doubt when meeting business challenges is a natural part of the process of building your practice. The challenges and risks initially can seem overwhelming but, as long as you hold on to your belief that you can overcome them, you can maintain your confidence, and do it.
If you believe that, despite your challenges, you are the master of your fate, you are much more likely to succeed... and do it more quickly. In effect, how you view your value and your actions toward your success is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Therefore, it is imperative that you not let the temporary overwhelm lessen your confidence in what you can and want to do.
