Computer memory is defined by the way information is sorted into categories on a machine such as a computer in a specific system which is designed to store such data. Because this works in a similar way to our own brains, we use the term "computer memory". In simple terms, computer memory refers to the physical devices which are used to store data or programs either permanently or temporarily. HDD, otherwise known as traditional hard disk drives use electromechanical devices involving moving parts such as spinning disks, while a solid state disk drive does not have any moving parts, but instead uses a non volatile memory chip, also known as a micro chip.
Solid state disk drives are have many advantages over traditional standard HDDs or traditional hard disk drives. They have lower access time and latency, and are less likely to break due to physical shock, as well as being quieter. They are also smaller and can also be used on the same interface as a hard disk drive or HDD, making it easy to switch from one format to another in most applications.
One way of storing data on a solid state disk drive is by using memory cards. Otherwise known as flash cards, memory cards are electronic flash computer memory storage devices which are used for holding data. Memory cards are commonly used in electronic devices such as laptops, digital cameras, mobile phones, MP3 players and games consoles. Memory cards are re-recordable and have the advantage of being very small and have diminished in size as new technological advances in memory storage technology have taken place, making them highly portable and able to be transferred from school to the workplace to the home. Unfortunately this also puts memory cards at a disadvantage as this makes them easier to lose, and they can transfer viruses from one computer to another. If memory cards are bought with the intention of storing a high amount of data on them they can also be expensive.
