Whether it's the bad economy putting families under extra stress, or just a fast paced world that forces kids to mature so quickly, almost every family is faced with some kind of youth discipline issue. The dilemma for many families seems to be, are they even recognizing that there is a problem, and if not, why not.
When you have young kids, you're most likely a bit younger than I am. Even so, even if you're in your late twenties/early thirties, you might have seen a change in our culture. This society is just so quick paced. And with the vast popularity of computers, and phone/text messaging, virtually each child has turned out to be accustomed to a world where they receive constant and immediate stimulus.
So how does all this relate to youth discipline? Well, maybe it doesn't. Nonetheless, if you are near my age (I'm not that old, I'm 50 now), I'm sure you can recall a much slower paced society. I know that sounds like I'm an old geezer, and I'm not, I can assure you. And I use the internet for numerous reasons.
It's just that, I do not believe we realize how much different and quick paced a world we genuinely live in now. The positive side to that is that I know for sure, my children are smarter than I was at their age. But is there a price to pay for how advanced everything is now, and how much they discover at some really young ages.
Surely, a lot of parents watch their youngsters carefully, and don't permit them to go on Facebook prior to a particular age, or to have a computer in their room when they're very young. How do you monitor Facebook activities when you can do all that on a cell phone?
Clearly, the world is always changing, and hopefully parents continue to find ways to keep a step ahead of their children. Hopefully parents still take the time to instill family values in their children, and impress on them how important it is for the family to spend time together.
I'm sure you've heard the commercial where President Obama talks about how important it is to just have a few family meals together every week. Now that's saying something when we have to be reminded how important it is for the family to spend some quality time together. Regardless, it is a wonderful suggestion, and it has proven to be effective. When families make sure to spend quality time together, the children will be much better for it.
Now, if you are reading this, you are probably in the minority of families who may have some issues with your children, and are acknowledging it, and trying to do something about it. Believe me, I've seen hundreds of families that just don't have the gumption to get gut level honest about this ever so important topic. It's certainly not easy to admit that there are problems in the family, but if there are issues, the only way to solve them is to acknowledge that they exist.
