Ultra filtration Membrane Technology CSIR CSMCRI Technology

Recently I visited CSIR technofest 2010 showcased by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, the Capital of India. In this technofest, I have seenone technology related to water as a lay man to understand about what is "Water Disinfection Hollow Fibre Ultra filtration Membrane Technology"; aCSIR CSMCRI Technology

Water purification is highest priority of many governments since it causes many diseases to people due to contamination in the water. Recently membranes are developed for water purification and for the removal of contamination, bacteria and finally viruses. Technology in the membranes is about the size of pores in the membrane and how it filtered or removed the bacteria and viruses. If the pore size of the membrane is less than the size of bacteria and viruses, then bacteria and viruses are stopped at the beginning of the pore size and send it out. Purified or filtered water without bacteria or virus can be obtained after filtering. For this force is required to send the water through the pores of membranes. Mainly electricity is used to pump the water for this forcing to filter the water.

Invention - The Hallow fibre membranes having above 1-1.5 mm OD and 0.6-1.0 ID with pore size in the range of 0.01 0.2 microns and are useful for disinfection of drinking water as they exhibit 4-6 log reduction for viruses and bacteria, and simultaneously remove other contamination like turbidity, colloidal particles, etc. were developed.

Based on indigenous Indian Hallow Fibres, the CSMCRI (Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar 364 002, Gujrat State, India) has developed a simple, inexpensive and easy to operate portable drinking water purification device that does not require any electricity and produces microbial free drinking water by hand pump pressure or by connecting to a tap from the overhead tank.

The beauty of technology is no electricity is required, so there is no electricity charge for this technology, only hand pumping or overhead tank tap is enough for forcing the water to filter and get the drinking water without bacteria, viruses and other contamination.

Technical details, specifications and full details of technology and its commercialization details will be available with the CSMCRI, Bhavnagar, Gujarat. Those who are interested in this technology all over the world can contact this laboratory and purify the water for saving human mankind.
