subject: The Importance Of Rugby Protection [print this page]

Rugby is certainly an exhilarating and fun game to play but it is important to know that it can also be dangerous. Wearing the right protective gear is crucial when playing the game, and there is a variety of rugby protection that can be purchased to help protect those body parts!

Headguard

You will firstly need to invest in a good headguard. This will shelter and provide protection to every bit of your head, but not the facial area. It will cover your ears, which is crucial as this is a part of the body most commonly injured whilst playing rugby. The headguard will be fastened onto your head with a strap under the chin and often worn by many professionals to avoid what is known as 'Cauliflower Ear". The ear sections of your headguard should be protective but it is important that they do not block your hearing - communication with team-mates is an important part of playing rugby and should be retained.

Mouthguard

It is also a good idea to invest in a mouthguard. This will protect your teeth and the jaw area. It should be able to fit snugly around your teeth and will have a cushiony surface. When purchasing your mouthguard it might also be useful to check how well it absorbs impacts and heavy shock as this will provide better protection for your teeth.

Protective Top

One important aspect of rugby protection is the protective top. This can be worn underneath the usual rugby kit and has pads on the shoulder, back area and chest. In order to move around more easily these pads should be flexible but also strong and sturdy enough to offer protection from heavy impact.

Gloves

Rugby gloves can often be an understated form of rugby protection but choosing the right gloves can have an impact on your ability and skill during a match as you should be able to throw and run with the ball successfully. If they don't protect your hands fully then you may well lose confidence when catching the ball on some occasions. Many gloves also provide heated insulation which is important in keeping the hands comfortable in inclement weather

Thigh and Shin Guards

It is extremely important to protect your legs and investing in thigh and shin guards is a must, however, you should make sure that the padding provided does not damage the movements of the joints but should block impacts.

Rugby Footwear

These should always be worn on the rugby field as they will aid your performance and keep your feet safe. Which types of boots are worn really depends on the pitch conditions - there is a huge variety of rugby boots on the market which can protect your feet.

Rugby protection really is a crucial part of the game as although the sport is undoubtedly fun and exciting, it is also dangerous due to the high amount of physical contact involved. Search online for a huge variety of rugby protection products at affordable prices
